Aime Cesaire's A Tempest is a politicized take on Shakespeare's play created during the late sixties, a time of great social change. These papers were written primarily by students and provide critical analysis of A Tempest by Aime Cesaire. People who enjoy re-writes of originals. Prospero decides to remain on the island and continues to hold power over there while Caliban continues to sing his song of freedom, leaving the audience with questions about the remaining effects of colonialism. 1559362103 By the end of A Tempest, Ariel gains his freedom using his own strategy of non-violence, obedience and patience. The thing I didn't like about this play is how directly political it is. It is really a "post-colonial response to The Tempest " and as such deals much more with the story from the point of view of Caliban and Ariel . Caliban’s quest to regain his freedom is also depicted as a hopeless attempt in front of an almighty Prospero who uses magic to perform his plans and who relies on the obedient Ariel to perform certain tasks.
Another instance of taking a piece of traditional, white English literature, and using it almost against the culture that created it. Cesaire's project is a distinctly post-colonial program, critiquing the colonialist and imperialist ideology in Shakespeare's The Tempest. I appreciate the idea, but the dialogue did not keep me interested.Usually I like Shakespeare adaptations, but I wasn't particularly a fan of this one. His works have been translated into many languages. This means Cesaire gets a bit preachy to the detriment of his writinThis was a fascinating post-colonial take on Shakespeare. Césaire depicts Caliban as a black slave and presents Ariel as a mulatto slave, instead of making him a spirit. I appreciate it in the same way that I appreciate Uncle Tom's Cabin.
But really, it's not a great read.Well. Everything that wasn't there to express the heavy-handed theme was just a lazy summary of the plot of The Tempest with watered-down versions of the characters. Of the violence of words and the silencing of voices that can come of a Western Heritage? There is some language in it and I wouldn't recommend it to high school, but college is appropriate for this play, if ever you were taking a class in which you had to reaThis was a super quick read and I liked its rawness and down to earth language.
