I picked Mount Major in Alton, NH, which is right down the road from Ellacoya State Park. Major State Forest which is in the Belknap Range. This trail (marked red) up to summit is definitely less traveled than the other trails from main parking up north. I took 5 kids on this hike, 14, 12, twin 5 and a 3 year old. Super stoked that there's portapotties here. Before you get to the top the view just gets better and better. The blue trail is difficult more at the top because of ice but a really fun trail to go up. The view at the top is totally worth it!Mount Major gets 5 stars for amazing 360 degree summit views of Lake Winnipesaukee and nearby mountains while simultaneously being one of the nicest and easiest hikes close to Boston. Other than that, it's more about the incline of going towards the top that had me winded. Also, don't forget to pack some bug spray.This is a great quick hike that will push you a bit in spots, but has great views, especially of Lake Winnipesaukee. It's an amazing reward for finding your footing up the rocky incline. Get there early though to avoid the crowds (you can even watch the sunrise at the top).I would give Mount Anna a full five stars if it wasn't for the poorly marked trails that led my nephews and I on a much more difficult path than we were prepared for. My husband and I took our 7 yo son and we chose the orange trail (boulder) on the way up. We went down the orange trail on the way back because there's less ice. it was a bit steep in some areas, but we didn't have too much trouble. It was well worth it once we got to to summit! We stopped a few times because it was extra humid in the forest but once you get out of it, the air feels amazing! Some areas were really steep and the little kids required help but overall this was a great hike.Great weather.
