Includes Battle Hymn of the Republic Rhonda Reene; When Johnny Comes Marching Home Simon & Verity Grace, and more.

This item was a vocal companion piece to the instrumental soundtrack for the 1990's PBS mini-series by Ken Burns.

A Treasury Of Civil War Songs

Overall, it's a pretty enjoyable album, especially if you want a better taste of Civil War era life. Prompted by the success Ken Burns's popular Civil War documentary (which spawned its own soundtrack),

I owned almost every one of them at one time, and wore them out playing them: Hawaii, Cumberland Gap, Songs of the Sea, Songs of the Civil War, In the Good Old Summertime, Barbershop Melodies, John Phillip Sousa marches, and others.

One of them was over recently and when asked what genre of music he's like he responded by saying "Civil War". A Treasury Of Civil War Songs I have played this CD several times over the last couple of months, and I enjoy it each time I hear it.

I enjoyed it very much.

While I have just about everything musical from Italian opera to Native American drumming and singing, I was caught unprepared and thus I was embarrassed. That is a minor quibble, however, because this disc rewards repeated listening, and features fine performances by Kathy Mattea, Hoyt Axton, Waylon Jennings, Judy Collins, John Hartford, the McGarrigle sisters, Richie Havens and Ronnie Gilbert.

In their absence, I am glad to have this product and I thank Columbia and Ken Burns for making it happen. It's a mix of both the folk style and the traditional band arrangements.

It has the necessities, "Dixie" (a banjo rendition) and "Battle Hymn of the Republic".

Add "Ashokan Farewell" and "Dixie" and a bunch of other classics and you have a compendium of wonderful songs that you will listen to often.

"Home Sweet Home" and "Listen to the Mockingbird" are great instrumental tracks, it's clear they had some talented banjo and fiddle players participating.

The instrumentation is simple but elegant; interpretations and character are moving.

I was disappointed in the selections featuring "Sweet Honey in the Rock."

I have always been a student of the civil war and this collection takes me back in time. Hard Road: Favorite Camp Songs of the Civil War

Hard Road: Favorite Camp Songs of the Civil War

Like I said, this was supposed to be background music to set a mood only.

Our goal was to promote learning and this music definitely contributed to our goal's success! Instead, the music prompted a lot of interest with many people commenting on it, some sang or hummed along, and much conversation was generated.
